qualifications
I don't think qualifications as a substitute for real world experience. Rather, I see them as complementary. To me they represent a structured and comprehensive way of exploring a particular set of technologies leading to better understanding and knowledge consolidation.
Some of these certification exams, such as those issued by the Linux Foundation, are about applying well understood concepts for solving real world problems under strict exam conditions. Other were project based where work had to be submitted for peer evaluation while others were proctored theoretical exams.
